DIY Suspended Tassel Backdrop

When working with clients in designing their wedding venue, I always try to create a focal point in the room. For their ceremony venue, it is usually where the vows are exchanged. For the reception, it is usually where the head table is going to be. A focal point can be created with props or lighting. The absolutely easiest way is to create a backdrop.

Backdrops can be designed and assembled on the day by a professional wedding decorator. If you are more the hands on type or want to create something one of a kind, here is stunning backdrop you can create with some patience and lots of yarn. (Full instructions here.)

If you are creating this backdrop, what color scheme would you use? And how many tassels would you create?

Get Clear Skin for Your Wedding

With every slight weather change, lack of sleep, or stress, my face breaks outs and tells me who's boss. Losing this control and seeing my face full (exaggeration) of spots makes me freak out and start doing everything I can. Not to mention use every single product I own.

If you are a bride in a similar situation - currently being freaked out, I suggest taking the following to help eliminate stress before your wedding and hopefully clear your skin up.

1. Get more sleep
If this is not possible, at least get the amount of sleep you usually get. Sleeping will help lower stress and allow your skin to heal. Extra bonus, use your facial products at night when you sleep so they have the chance to work it's magic and not get rubbed off during the day.

2. Eat healthier
No brainer on this one. You've heard of the phrase "You are what you eat." Well, I believe "You look what you eat." If you tend to eat fast food and generally crap food, your body is not going to like that. Your body will tell you through digestion, energy levels, and your face. (If you are slow at noticing change in your body, you will finally notice it on your face.)

3. Workout
Working out will release toxins from your body and improve energy levels. Extra bonus, you will get an awesome body before your big day.

4. Get facials
This can be done at home or out if you want to pamper yourself. The goal of facials is to deep skin your skin and prep it for your big day. If you can afford it, you might want to consider getting facials from a professional once a month before your big day. Your skin will thank you. As will your photographer when touching up your photos.

5. Emergency kit
Pack an emergency kit for your wedding, dedicated to your skin. Of course, you will be having your coverup make up with you, but also include any spot treatments you are using too. Make sure you read the labels though, after using some products you should not be in the sun. (Example: wedding pictures outside.)

If you have any other tips or great products to suggest, please let me know! My skin and I are currently freaking out.

DIY Gem Place Card Holders

Last weekend one of my brides asked me what are place cards and if they are necessary. I told her that it is only necessary if you would like assigned seating at your wedding reception. Translation: you would like specific people to sit in a specific seat at your wedding. If you don't have a preference and would just like people to sit at a specific table, you just need a seating chart. (Whole other story here.)

You might think place cards are formal, fussy, and just another thing you have to do before the wedding but there are easy DIY alternatives that can be done way in advance to the wedding. The DIY below is the perfect example. Actually, it is quite a gem. (haha)

For this project, you will need:
-¼” wood blocks (available at Michaels)
-glue (hot glue or Aleen’s tacky glue work well)
-oversized acrylic gems – I found a big bag of assorted shapes and colors at Michaels, but you can also pick your color and buy in bulk here
-Liquid Gilding in the color of your choice (Optional)
-paint brush (Optional)

1. Use a line of glue at the bottom of each block to glue it to the bottom of the gem. Use a folded piece of paper to leave some space at the top of the block for the escort card to slide in. Let dry.

2. Leave your gem colors as is, or paint them all a uniform metallic with liquid gilding paint. Let dry.

That's it!

Finding Your Bridal Style

Often the first things you get asked after you get engaged is: "What kind of bride will you be?" You then will hear this question again and again when wedding vendors meet you and attempt to gauge your wedding style. Not sure what to tell them? Check out this infographic. It might provide you the answer you need (for all those times you get asked the same question!)

How to Use Your Mom's Wedding Gown At Your Wedding

This post is dedicated to the brides with a momzilla that wants you to wear her wedding gown. The power of momzilla is just too strong to say no to and you are at a lost as to how you can get out of wearing her wedding gown. An easy out would be if it doesn't fit. However, if it does, you have an issue. Here are some ways you can include your mom's wedding gown in your wedding by honoring it without wearing it.

Wrap your bouquet with a swatch of your mom's wedding gown.
Sweet Ideas for Parents

Make it part of a necklace.

Use a piece of lace to make a keepsake garter.

Take a picture with your mom in her wedding gown in the background.

Display your mom's gown at your wedding ceremony. Better yet, include your grandma's and great grandma's wedding gowns if you have them too.
Sweet Ideas for Parents

For the dad's - cut up one of your dad's shirt and include it with your wedding gown. This could be your something blue.

What do you think of these ideas? Would you dare to suggest one of these? If not, just send your mom a link to this post. It might work out or it might backfire because she now knows you call her momzilla behind her back. Good luck!

Finding The Right Wedding Veil For You

With wedding season just around the corner, most summer brides are now concentrating on finding the right accessories to complete their wedding look. One of the key wedding accessories is a wedding veil. Most brides feel a veil is too traditional and maybe even reminds them of their mom's wedding pictures, but trust me, that little piece of tulle on your head is the icing on the cake. It WILL make you feel more like a bride.

Veils come in a variety of lengths. Once you have figured out the length of veil you would like, you can start to look for veils with designs that complement your wedding gown. You don't want them to compete against each other. The wedding gown should still and always be the showstopper. The veil is like a bridesmaid, just trying their best to help.

The last thing you will want to do is to bring your veil to the hair stylist that will be doing your hair on your wedding day. He/she will have to work this veil into your hair and consider what your hair will look like if you chose to remove the veil for the wedding reception. (Of note: While most brides just wear their veil at the wedding ceremony. There are no hard and fast rules preventing you from wearing your veil the entire day.)

Check out the picture below that explains the different lengths of wedding veils. Good luck with your search!

Seasonal Flower Guide: Spring

One of the best ways to save money on your wedding bouquet is by having it made with seasonal flowers. Sure you "can" get whatever flower you want but this may come at a cost to you if they have to be flown in from Holland air mail the week before your wedding. A perk of choosing seasonal flowers is the abundance of them and you can ensure they are fresh and healthy. This is really important because your bouquet has to last the entire day, mostly out of water.

One of the best ways to have your florist love you and do a great job on your bouquet is by knowing what flowers you want. Here are the seasonal spring flowers and flowers that are available year round. Let us know what flowers you are having for your spring wedding! We would love to know!

How Much Wedding Cake to Serve?

Choosing your wedding cake is one of the funnest parts of wedding planning. First off there is the tasting part. You get to sample a bunch of cake favors to chose the right one that represents your combined personality. Then you get to design the cake that reflects your wedding vision. You are literally designing a cake from the bottom up.

One of the harder things of designing a cake is to know what size of cake you need to feed all your guests. Below is an infographic for your reference. Use this as a reference point and consider the dietary restrictions of your guests. If you know for sure that half of your guests won't be eating cake, take that into consideration when ordering your cake. The pastry chef will be able to make suggestions based on their experience of typical wedding needs. You are the one that knows your guests. Choosing a cake close to your needs will save you money and reduce waste.

Enjoy and eat lots of cake! It is truly the best thing to end a great wedding day.
