Wedding Dress Rules to Ditch

After sharing with our readers some of the wedding traditions we feel can and should be ditched, we thought we would extend our opinions to wedding dress rules that can be ditched. Like before, take what you want from these rules. If they work for you, do it. If they don't, just tell your fiance/mother/mother-in-law you read somewhere "insert wedding dress rule" is not in style/trendy/cool anymore.

If you missed the blog series on wedding traditions to ditch, you can read it here: part 1, part 2, and part 3.

Your gown must be floor length.
Our thoughts, nah. There are plenty of shorter gowns that are appropriate for weddings. Gone are the days where short wedding gowns are only for backyard or last minute weddings.

Your gown has to be white.
Previously, wedding gowns had to be white because it signified innocence and virginity. We are not going there. Gowns can be any color you desire and designers have made colored gowns more accessible and fashionable.

Your gown has to be really fancy, cause it is your big day.
When shopping for your wedding gown, I am sure someone has already said to you: "But it is your big day, when else can you wear a big fancy dress?" If you are not into a fancy gown and it is just not your style. Opt for a simpler gown that suits you. Whatever you chose will be right gown for you.

Wearing lace is old fashioned.
You might have heard your fiance say he thinks lace is old fashioned and it reminds him of a doily. If this is the case, gently remind him that his the doilies his grandma makes is of a different material and your gown will not look anything like that. (You might also want to remind him he HAS to think and say you are beautiful no matter what.)

 Anna Roussos

Your gown will be and has to be expensive and brand new.
This is SO untrue. Designers often have a lesser expensive line of gowns or collaborations with big box stores. You can also get gowns from last year's collection. Of course, there are also opportunities through consignment.

Wedding Guest Attire Suggestions

There are three main rules to wedding guest attire (for female guests):
  1. Don't wear white regardless of how cute you look in it. If you are close enough to the bride, you can ask for permission first. There are tons of colors in the rainbow for you to chose from, chose a different color from the bride.
  2. Dress appropriately for the formality of the wedding. If it is a black tie wedding, don't wear something you would wear for a beach wedding. The couple has a specific vision for their wedding, respect that. If you have no idea what the level of formality is, take clues from their wedding invitation or ask the wedding couple.
  3. Let the bride shine and don't be the center of attention. You will have your time to shine but don't try to steal the spotlight from the bride. What this means is nothing too revealing, short, or flashy. Still have no clue whether something is too too much? Ask yourself if you will be noticed by everyone. If the answer is yes, leave that dress for the club.
Here are some suggestions on what you can wear to a wedding as a guest. The suggestions are tasteful and fashionable. Just because it is not your day, you should still look and feel good.

V loves B - {A One-Sided Telling of} Our Love Story and Engagement

B. and I met on September 28, 2009 over an OK meal at the Highwood. One of B.’s friends, who at the time, was a food blogger, was trying to get together a monthly supper club with some of his personal friends and some food bloggers. I was the only food blogger who showed up at this first gathering. B. and I happened to be sitting next to each other, so we decided to try the Chateaubriand, to see what this “at-the-table” French service was all about.

The next day, I wrote an email to my friend, Chelsea, whom I’d been exchanging dating exploits with.

“[...] So anyway, the CUTEST guy was sitting next to me, of course I don't know if he's into me or if even he has a girlfriend but the feeling was like, ‘Yes! This is what it's like to have a crush on someone.’ lol.”

5 minutes later, another email:

“Successful Facebook stalkage! He is single. And 10 years older than me :(“

In the end, he added me on Facebook, and removing the year from my birthdate before I accepted the friend request was completely ineffective in concealing my age. Still, after months of Facebook messaging, Google chatting, music swapping, another group outing, talking obsessively about him to my girlfriends and coworkers and a failed attempt at me asking him out on a date, we went on our first date on November 7, 2009.

Our Engagement

I didn’t see the engagement coming. We both knew that we eventually wanted to get married, but I was always afraid that talking about marriage and weddings would imply that I wanted to get married right NOW, and I didn’t want that, nor did I want B. to feel pressured, so we never talked about it seriously.

In May/June of this year, we left on a three-and-a-half week trip to Asia. Our itinerary included six days in Seoul, 15 days in Japan and four days in Hong Kong.

While in Japan, we stayed in a popular onsen (hot springs) resort town called Hakone. B. managed to snag a room in this baller ryokan called Hakone Ginyu, which is usually booked up six months in advance, but fortunately for us, there was a last minute cancellation.

The ryokan was very beautiful - they were all done up in a traditional style, with tatami mats, a private dining room and a private onsen at the back. The service was professional but friendly; every single detail was accounted for.

HakoneGinyu.jpg

B. and I were hanging out in our “backyard” when he started to say, “I love you.” Note that this is only the second time he has said “I love you” and not “I love you too”, so I knew something was up. He went on to say that while he knew things hadn’t been the greatest, he wanted me to be in his life. Then, he pulled out the ring from underneath a towel and asked him if I would marry him! I instantly burst into tears.

Unlike the movies or the YouTube engagement videos, I didn’t say “Yes” right away, because I was shocked and unprepared, but I also managed to not blurt out “I don’t know” either. The next two or three minutes - which probably felt like an eternity for B. - he just kissed me and hugged me while I cried my eyes out. Finally, I decided to abandon my life goal of marrying rich and whispered “Yes” twice very quietly, and he clearly did not hear me because finally he held me in front of him and asked, “So what are you thinking?”

“I already said yes twice!”

“Well say it again, cuz I didn’t hear you.”

“Yes, I will marry you, B!”

I still remember that huge smile he had on his face. He was so excited.

After our engagement, the first thing I did was WhatsApp my parents, who live in Hong Kong. After congratulating me, my mom says, “Oh, today is May 20 and 520 sounds like ‘I love you’ in Mandarin.”

I almost puked in my mouth.

Vincci Tsui is a food writer/lover/eater by day, and a raging bridezilla by night. She is marrying B. on July 25, 2015.

New Blog Series: V loves B!
V (Vincci) is the first friend I met through twitter. Who knew it can actually happen! She heard of Wishahmon through a mutual friend and suggested one of her peeps to contact me to help with their wedding plans. After digging a little bit deeper to learn who this chick was, we met up a couple of times and bonded over mac and cheese (don't judge). I absolutely adored her!

I saw a picture of an engagement ring on her Instagram but it wasn't until she "announced" it to me via twitter that I knew for sure! I asked if she would like to blog once a month about her wedding plans and she said yes! Make sure you watch out for her blog posts!

Kenneth Pool Gown Available!
We are super duper excited about this gown! It retails over $5800 and we have it for $3500! It is a once loved gown in perfect condition. Sized 10. If you are interested in the gown, contact us right away. Only those that special request this gown will get to try it on!

Gorgeous Short Wedding Gowns

When brides think of having a short wedding gown, they often associate it with small backyard weddings, getting married at City Hall or just in front of an officiant, or a quick and simple wedding. Think Sarah Jessica Parker in Sex and the City movie in her wedding suit. (Not the fancy gowns).

Short wedding gowns have come a long way and brides are becoming more open minded towards them. These gowns are fancier and appropriate for a lot of different (formality) weddings. What do you think? Would you wear a short wedding gown to your wedding day?

Wedding Photo Display Ideas

Typically, the second greatest wedding expense is photography. (Wedding reception takes up about 50% of the wedding budget.) After spending all that money on hiring a great photographer and getting great photos, couples rarely do anything with them. Some photography packages include a photo album which is great because you know you might not ever get around to creating a photo album yourself, whether it is developing the pictures and putting it in an album or making a digital album online.

I always try to convince my clients to print out their pictures and enjoy them in someway, whether it is in an album or a photo wall. Another great idea is having a photo collage. There are so many ways you can display your wedding pictures. Below are some ideas.

DIY Kids Wedding Favors

Unless you specifically state your wedding is adults only, you can expect a couple of young guests at your wedding. Keeping them entertained and occupied will keep you stress free and allow for their parents to enjoy the wedding as well. Some couples have kids tables with puzzles and coloring books. I like this idea except you always have to dedicate a person or parent to watch over the little ones. This isn't the table where you can ditch your kids and enjoy the wedding on your own.

An alternative couples have opted for are wedding favors especially for kids. These wedding favors are often something that can entertain the kids for hours (you wish). Below is a simple DIY kids coloring favor. You can view the full tutorial if you are interested. I really like this idea because you can easily customize the coloring pages to your wedding or you can download pictures too. Either way, this wedding favor is super easy and cute!
